The Diplomat

THE DIPLOMAT is a documentary that follows Timorese resistance leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner José Ramos Horta as he travels the world trying to secure independence for his forgotten country, a former Portuguese colony invaded by Indonesia in 1975.

The film documents the epic struggle of the Timorese resistance movement over a crucial 18 months: from just before the fall of Indonesian dictator Suharto from power, to Ramos Horta's triumphant return to a liberated East Timor after 24 years in exile. All this unfolds against a backdrop of a United Nations referendum, the carnage by Indonesian-backed militias following an overwhelming vote for independence, and the intervention by international troops led by Australia.
